Climate action and sustainability

Tipperary Credit Union is a Not-For-Profit financial organisation owned by and run for the benefit of its members.

It is important to us that we take an active interest in the people’s social and economic lives within our common bond. As well as meeting our members financial needs, we are also involved in and support many community groups and events.

This support and involvement have improved the lives and wellbeing of our members and helped us become a core part of our local community. Our members’ relationship with us has lasted for generations as we offer a personal touch overlooked by other financial institutions. It is the strength of that relationship and our members’ belief in our value to them and their community that our true worth is captured.

Sustainability and building resilient communities have been core operating principles of Tipperary Credit Union movement for over 50 years and our ESG Committee is proud to take the opportunity to tell our members about our sustainable achievements.

Helping members reduce their carbon footprint.

We provide loans to members for retrofitting and improving the energy rating of their homes.
We provide loans for electric cars. We have 2 charge points for members to encourage them to go electric.
We encourage members to sign up for E-Agm notifications. We run yearly competitions to encourage members to sign up electronically.
Our online banking services are available for members to view statements. This facility is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our Social Commitments Include:

Products and Services benefiting the local community

Tipperary Credit Union introduced the PMC loans which allowed us to lend to members who are unemployed. These loans are up to €500, and we hope they prevent members from using money lenders that charge extortionate interest rates.

We offer revolving credit to members to cover costs such as emergency costs, fuel, or electricity costs. Revolving Credit reduces the amount of paperwork needed.
Provide death benefit and life assurance on savings and loans, at no educational cost to members, which helps to reduce the worry and financial burden of funeral costs.
We provide a personal counter service in the local community that deals with cash and coin as well as electronic transactions 6 days a week.
Tipperary Credit union rewards where possible members by offering a return on savings in the form of a dividend. We also provide an interest rebate on loans. This rebate is usually paid in December to help alleviate the financial stress sometimes experienced by members at Christmas time.
Education
We provide Annual Transition year Bursary awards to five pupils in our common bond to help cover the costs of Transition year.
We offer six John Gaynor Scholarships worth €9,000 to support Third Level Students in their educational goals.
We ran the smart start program in local primary schools to teach children about financial literacy.
Clubs and sports organization

We have a community committee fund of €35,000 for local initiatives. We financially support local clubs, groups and organizations who encourage and facilitate people of all ages to participate in sporting, cultural and social activities and alleviate social exclusion and disadvantage.
Diversification
We have supported the temporary relocation of Ukrainian Nationals by providing banking/current account facilities for them. A staff member met with the local Ukrainian group to explain what services and products were available to them.
The gender and age profile of our Board of Directors, Volunteers and staff and the gender balance of our management team.
Our products and services are available to everyone living or working in our common bond regardless of gender, race, nationality, politics, and socio-economic group.

Future Sustainable Development Goals

Environmental Goals

Work with the tidy towns committee re bird feeders and installation of bee hotels in the local communities.
Consider worthy projects for possible funding such as tree planting, recycling, and Tipperary tidy towns biodiversity projects.

Review internal practices and make realistic and achievable recommendations for improvements such as an energy audit and rainwater harvesting.

This influx of wildlife helps create a balanced ecosystem where different species interact, contributing to a healthier environment.

Involve the credit union in sustainable energy community projects.

Social Goals

Introduce a Plassey scholarship for first year students in University of Limerick.
We reduced our mortgage rate for members to make mortgages more affordable.
Link our credit union sponsorship with organizations who have ESG goals.
Engage more with tidy towns re local biodiversity projects.
Provide peaceful and inclusive credit unions that cater for people with additional needs. We aim to achieve this by reducing noise levels and reducing lights in the office.
We are sponsoring both the men and ladies UL wolves rugby teams.

Tipperary Credit Union Ltd is owned and run by local people. Any surplus made by our Credit Union is funneled back into business operations and to our local community in the form of sponsorships.
Credit Union profits are directed towards improving your local community, as a result we are a reliable, local, and trusted organization. However, there is always room for improvement, and we are committed to improving our climate action and sustainability footprint.
